It takes a village, and our district has the best one around. When the 3A State Softball Tournament was left scrambling due to flooded fields in North Idaho, Aaron Miller and our maintenance crew, along with an army of Kellogg volunteers, turned things around in record time to host the games.

Dear Kellogg, This past weekend I had the honor of being the co-Tournament Manager, along with Dakota Wickard, St. Maries Athletic Director, of the 3A State Softball Tournament. We agreed to the position when Catey Walton of Timberlake was unable to. We felt it was important to keep the state tournament here in North Idaho even though we knew that overseeing a tournament in Timberlake and Lakeland would be difficult given our proximity to the fields. On Thursday morning of May 14, the opening day of the tournament, I arrived at Lakeland High School at 6:30 am to see a field that was not playable. There was water from 1st Base all the way to 2nd Base, probably 2 inches deep in the center. There was another puddle from 2nd Base to three quarters of the way to 3rd Base. To top it off, there were two additional puddles between 3rd Base and the pitching mound. Quite simply, there was no way the field would be playable. Dakota, Julie Hammonds and I began putting together Plan B, which was to move the games at Lakeland to Sandpoint. At the same time, we worked with the Lakeland Administration and their maintenance crew to begin the process of getting the water off the field. Plan B fell through at approximately 9:30 am when it was discovered that because the field at Sandpoint was turf, cleats could not be used, which affected all the teams. Plan C was Worley, but with it being a turf field, same result. We called all the local Park and Rec Departments in Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene and Rathdrum and were told that their fields were already in use. I then recommended we go to Kellogg. I knew we had rain but our field drains well and after talking with Aaron Miller, our Head of Maintenance, I knew we could pull it off. At 11 am, Julie signed off on Kellogg and I called Aaron to get our field ready and all the other necessary phone calls to get volunteers, workers and a plan in place to host 2 games starting at 3:00 pm. After working at the Lakeland field until 12:45 pm to give us a chance to be able to use that field on Friday, I headed to Kellogg and called our school to get some tables and chair set out so that I could just grab them and head to the field. By 1:30 pm I was at the field setting up for the games. Aaron and his Maintenance Crew had the field looking beautiful. Our Maintenance Crew is simply the best in the state. Aaron and his people got the Lakeland Field playable on Friday after getting our field set up and was on call the whole weekend. I worried whether we would have enough people to cover the game and funnel the fans through the front as with this being an IHSAA State event everyone had to have tickets. I should have known better. Kellogg citizens, business leaders, KHS students, teachers and administrators all jumped in immediately, just wanting to know from me what was needed and how they could help. Our District Office administration, from Lance Pearson, our Superintendent to the classified staff, everyone was on board and helping. The games went seamless, and at the end of the day, because of you Kellogg, we showed what is possible. We showed our kids that we can do anything if we are together, and we showed the state the “Can-Do” attitude we have always had. alumni Spotlight Leah White Principal, Pinehurst Elementary For Pinehurst Elementary Principal Leah White, the phrase "once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat" isn't just a slogan, it’s her life’s work. A 1990 graduate of Kellogg High School, Leah’s journey through the Kellogg School District has come full circle in the most literal way possible. After graduating from KHS, Leah attended Lewis-Clark State College, earning her degree in Elementary Education and a Reading Endorsement in 1994. By August of that same year, she was back home, hired as a first-grade teacher at Pinehurst Elementary. Leah’s career path is a testament to her dedication to PES students at every level. She spent two years in first grade, eight years in second, and was a foundational part of the transition to full-day kindergarten, where she taught for 13 years. Her passion for student success eventually led her to a Title I teaching position, during which she earned her Master’s degree in Leadership. Today, she is in her fourth year leading the very school where she started her career. When asked how KHS prepared her for life, Leah’s answer was simple: "Going to school at KHS and in the Kellogg School District made me know that I never wanted to be anywhere else." That commitment to the Silver Valley extends to her family life. Outside of the principal’s office, Leah is a proud "District Mom." You’ll usually find her in the bleachers, cheering on her son, Lowden, at football games or wrestling meets. When she isn't at a sporting event, she enjoys camping and the North Idaho outdoors. To the current students of KSD, Leah offers two pieces of advice that have clearly guided her own path: "Go after your dreams. Support your community." We are so proud to have Leah White leading the next generation at PES. As she puts it, "This is a great place to be!"

In Case You Missed It:
There is a common misconception that school tax rates only go up. However, as the attached chart shows, the school district’s tax rate has actually decreased significantly over the last several years, even as property values in the Silver Valley have risen.

How is this possible?
Due to changes in state legislation and the way the tax burden is distributed across a growing total property value base (the "taxable market value"), the actual cost per $1,000 of home value has trended downward.

Our goal is to ensure you have an accurate picture of how your investment in our schools translates to your tax bill.

ICYMI: The Future of Our Marine Corps JROTC
As we move toward the May 19th election, we are resharing this important look at one of the rarest programs in our state: the Kellogg High School Marine Corps JROTC.
In case you missed it, this video highlights a key fact regarding the program’s federal charter. Because the Marine Corps only authorizes a limited number of JROTC units nationwide, a loss of local funding doesn't just mean a "pause"—it means the charter is reallocated to another state, and the program cannot be replaced.
The MCJROTC is currently a 50/50 partnership between the U.S. Marine Corps and our local supplemental levy. Watch the clip below to see why this 50-year tradition is such a unique part of the Wildcat experience.

alumni Spotlight Ben Little Avista Utilities I graduated from Kellogg in 1992 when logging and mining was in a recession. There was a lot of uncertainty about what direction or path I should take. I always knew that the trades is where I wanted to be. I am currently the Operations Manager at Avista Utilities in the Silver Valley. I started my journey doing different labor jobs until I found what I really wanted to do for my career, a Journeyman Lineman. I started in 1998 and worked as a Lineman in different areas of the company until 2014 when I took the Foreman position and worked until 2022 in that role. As I continued my path, it was apparent that I could expand on my skills and was inspired to learn and grow my leadership abilities and I took the job as Manager back in the Silver Valley knowing it was home. You never know what path you will take, and it can be overwhelming when you overanalyze it. The only thing I knew was that the Silver Valley was always going to be home. Sometimes we put too much pressure on ourselves to succeed and have a plan, when all we really need to do is start somewhere and the rest will follow. I have always admired those who have a plan and follow it. Some of you know your passion before you leave high school and follow your dreams, that is extraordinary and so exciting to see. Always listen to your teachers and take their advice; they really care and lookout for your best interest. My advice would be to use all your resources around you, and if you don’t have a formal plan is to start with something that will help you grow and enjoy the ride! Take opportunities as they step in front of you and always give 100%. You will be noticed and you will shine.
